Early signalling guide

The aim of the Early Signalling Guide is to create awareness to proactivity in risk and issue management, specifically regarding emerging (food) technologies. The identification in an early stage of possible (negative) perceptions, hazards, risks or issues that may affect new food products and technologies is a crucial action to habituate, throughout the food production network.

This tool also includes an application of the ERIS (Emerging Risk Identification Support) system, originally developed by TNO (one of the C4A project partners) to support proactive risk management in food safety for industry and authorities. The core of the ERIS system is a text mining and natural language processing module that is fed by customized queries that use the ontology (a subject-defined knowledge base, including many keywords) to discover relationships (grammatical, e.g. cause-effect) in a big volume of documents from relevant data sources.

The purpose is therefore to explain not only the application of ERIS for the signalling of sentiments regarding emerging (food) technologies, but especially the line of thinking behind it to help food specialists being proactive and communicative.

There are two documents that can be downloaded. The Guide (pdf file) describes how to be aware of signals for issues and risks regarding emerging technologies and explain the ERIS system features.

The accompanying Excel file is a demonstrator showing an application of the ERIS system to emerging new food technologies and products.
