The University of Bologna - the oldest University in the western world (dating back to 1088) – is one of the top Italian universities, with about 100,000 students and 3,000 academic staff. For the EU's Seventh Framework Programme for Research (FP7), the University has set up a food research unit (Alma Food Research), which co-ordinates more than 500 researchers in the food area.


The Department of Statistics develops several research themes including statistical methods, demographics, agri-food economics and statistics, and social and bio-medical statistics. The Department has 63 academic staff members (plus 18 support staff) and provides two PhD programmes in ‘Statistical Methodology for Scientific Research’ and ‘Agri-food Economics and Statistics’.
